Roads

Everything has a price.

Opportunity cost. For every choice you make you are sacrificing something else. The thing you didn't choose, the road you didn't take.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood..."

It's all I can do not to dwell on the choices I didn't take, for better or for worse. There's no-one to help me choose, no-one to show me the way if I get lost down the wrong path. My life is defined by the sacrifices I make, by the roads I take.

'Twas ever thus...As long as you live there are going to be choices,..Decisions that will lead you,for better or worse,to your unique destination.
You are bright and beautiful...Trust your instincts.

I think we will never know where we would be if we had made the "other" choice.

I guess it is supposed to be that way. Or we would have taken the other choice in the first place.

It reminds me of that movie "Sliding Doors" I think it was called. The parallel worlds, where each decision we make ends up totally different.

LOVE the Robert Frost reference.

Makes me want to just start reading poetry again.

I mostly know what you mean, but I wonder whether anyone really makes "sacrifices" or if anything like "altruism" exists.

I mean, I suspect Mother Theresa wouldn't have been fulfilled as a stock broker, Nelson M. would have been a profoundly unhappy real estate agent, and Jesus Christ, if the story were true, really did want, from the bottom of his soul, to be crucified for the sake of saving the world.

Laura - yeah, and "the butterfly effect". we wish we knew...but we're better off not knowing. Noone wants to live a life of regret!

Ant - Glad you LOVED the reference! OOh, you read poetry? Man after my own heart!

Darius - You have my favourite name ever! Is it is Persian version? Yuo're right about Mother Teresa and Mandela...but I still think we make sacrifices. That's just the way it goes. I can go to bed or I can study. I either sacfrifice learning more, or I sacrifice sleep. An example in the most shallow sense, you understand.

It;s one thing thinking. And another thing making up your mind!

If by "sacrifice" you mean, "exerting willpower," I know what you mean.

I just use "Darius" because I think it's a cool name too!

although we know the earth is round, i find it so cool that while i am boiling in this heat that someone can enjoy the snow.

i love the snow. hate cold weather. go figure.

darius - ...aah i see. but i do love the name :) i don't mean exerting willpower though!

k - well, we don't get snow in SA, that was in Iran in the mountains. What I find amazing is that when you're boiling in the heat, and then drive up a mountain, you can find...SNOW!?

So what do you mean? What I mean is that people do what they want to do. This includes doing things that cost them materially or even physically. But they're willing to go through whatever it take if the passion is there. They aren't really "sacrificing" but going the way they want to, even it if entails hardship.

When she said,
"Don't waste your words, they're just lies,"
I cried she was deaf.
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes,
Then said, "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget,
Everybody must give something back
For something they get."

Haha, this is what your post reminded me of. Bob Dylan lyrics. You gotta love that man's music.

I know what you mean about choices, but i also think (as a true historian) that it's useless to wonder what 'would have happened if..'. It is of no use to get lost in thoughts like that.

Time spent wishing is time wasted..

Hey angel jr. - good to see ya back :)

Can you not be passionate about more than one thing, Darius? And sometimes one comes at the expense of the other. Sometimes you have to choose between the things you are passionate about...sacrifice one of them.

Jeeps - never really got into bob dylan...maybe I should try? Yeah, time spent wishing is time wasted - I should know I do an awful lot of it...

Very often it is wiser not to choose. Just let things be.

Ahh, lest you forget the last verse;

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

Your sacrifices will make a difference in your life and the lives of others. That is not always a bad thing. Your blog is beautiful. Your words are beautiful and make sense. You still have so many wonderful things to look forward to. What I have learned is that we should never look regretfully at the past nor fearfully toward the future. Keep that in mind, and your sacrifices will grow smaller. You will keep growing bigger and brighter. That I know.
