One of many whys

Someone tell me Why,

Why do humans do things that make them unhappy?

--------
My ghazal for the other day. The question? I can't remember...but I really liked this one.

Of her black hair I complain, O ask me not
Cause of her, lost I remain, O ask me not.
In the hope of loyalty, nobody leaves his heart & faith
I repent, my deeds disdain, O ask me not.
A sip of wine never cause misdeed or grief
Ignorant put me through so much pain, O ask me not.
O pious one, pass me by, 'cause this red wine
Makes your faith vain, drives you insane, ask me not.
On the path of life and soul, stories abound
One will strain & one will feign, O ask me not.
I longed for health and bliss, but alas
That seductress holds my rein, O ask me not.
I asked the ball of heavens, what is my role on this plane?
In the polo game of life I entertain, O ask me not.
I asked, with your hair whose blood you drain?
By God, this story is a long chain, O ask me not.

Too bad you forgot the question! And who is Hafez?

Seems to have a pretty wide-ranging complaint followed by: What's the meaning of life? ("What is my role on this plane?")

Religion sometimes suggests that complaining about life interferes with finding that meaning.

Leila said...

No, no. It's not a complaint at all! Hafez's poems have much deeper meanings! And he was very religious, too! Hafez was a Persian poet. A very famous one at that.

Follow this link if you will:

By question I mean question I asked, to which the poem was an answer! It's pretty neat! The poems make a lot of sense, and I love them, they're beautiful.

Most of the times humans do things that make others unhappy. every one is after happiness. you me plants animals, I have seen animals, birds entertain themselves.

no one willingly wants to be unhappy, things go wrong, expectations misfire by our actions.
'Expectations' the big problem Laila.

true, Rauf. But people do things that make themselves unhappy. I've seen it. They do it, knowing the outcome, presented with alternatives. WHY?

Leila said...

guerilla - but they do!

yeh i bet the poem was awesome in the original...but i can't read Persian :(

I think in an attempt to do something to bring happiness, they end up becoming unhappy. Sometimes I feel like they lack forsight.

sometimes i feel like unhappiness is a bad habit, just like anything else. but with this one, it's so ingrained that some folks don't know how to change it.

Nabeel said...

many do it because subconciously it makes them happy or satisfied or something .. I won't know but psychologically that's the answer ..

awesome awesome ghazal by Hafiz, the poet .. or is it Hafez?

Can you point me to the original version of this poem please?

In the polo game of life is very interesting .. still wondering it it is hafiz the poet or hafez (two different prounciations)

Leila said...

angel jr - maybe. maybe they do lack foresight.

k - yeah i like that theory!

nabeel - i think there's more to it than that...

It is Hafez the Persian poet. I write HafEz because in Farsi we pronounce it H-ah-fez (the ah is like in f(a)r. But they are the same man, just a different way of writing his name.

Now by original, do you mean the original in Farsi (doubt you caould do much with that) or this translated 'original'?

Anyhow here's the link: http://www.hafizonlove.com/divan/06/271.htm

y'know Maddy - I don't like many translations. It's hard to capture the beauty of Persian in English. But I do like Shariar's versions/ Most versions translated by actual Persians do a better job. One translator I can't stand for sure is that famous American dude. Can't quite recall his name right now...Cole Banks? Something along those lines!

If I was perfectly happy I'd annoy myself. Then again if was perfectly unhapppy I'd annoy myself. So I'll walk the fine line of normalcy...or as normal as I can be. Which is...uhm...whatever it is. That way when I have a good day after a bad one, I appreciate it more.

And it's a beautiful poem.

Unfortunately our species has not had enough time to adapt to the advances of population growth and technology. Our little 3 pound brains are still stuck in the 150 or so maximum for personal relationships, atleast that is the number that psychologists bandy about.
We automatically huddle in like-minded enclaves that attach themselves to other groups with tolerable variances.
For those of us wishing to smash the ancient inventions of segregation by any criteria it is a daunting task to ask someone to take a step back and look at the big picture. We're stuck here together. How can we make the most of it?
We have a pretty good idea of where, when and how we got here. The WHO and WHY seem unanswerable.
The immediate concern is to calm everybody down and recognise that we have far more in common with each other than we think.

Sorry for the verbosity...I should switch to decaf eh?

kate - thanks :)

well, trying to be happy and being disappointed is one thing. but can you explain doing things that make you unhappy, knowing it's going to make you unhappy?

the poem is beautiful, huh?
The best thing about the poems are they each have a moral, like something they're trying to tell you. That's why I love getting my fal. (i mean fortune by hafez, not our Fal!!)

Jenna - ah. normalness. i have issues with normality.

homo escapeons - from the little i understood of that, it seems to make sense.

wow. it was a pretty simple question!

I like that poem. WHy do people do things that make them unhappy? Who knows! I do like "rauf's" take on it though.

Darius said...

Oh, ok. Must be the kind of thing you need to read more of because the syntax and phraseology aren't contemporary. (I love the romantic period in English lit - nature poetry - but most people I know look at it and go, "Huh??")

I'm not sure why we do things that make us unhappy, but it does make joy all the more exquisite.

Zambo said...

Hey Leila!

I like the poem and I really like your new pic too!

As for doing stuff that makes us unhappy...I find that the older I get, the more I have to do stuff that I don't necessarily want to do...for the benefit of others. I guess it's all part of the compromise/sacrifice that goes with being in certain relationships. These things don't necessarily make me unhappy, but they're more like necessary evils, I guess...(Though I do dread "having" to do certain things or "having" to attend certain events, it's part of the give-and-take, I suppose)...Sometimes making others happy means making ourselves unhappy...That's my take on it anyway...

Sorry to ramble in your comments section...

Take care out there, Leila!

Your Pal,

Zambo.

Why humans do things to make them unhappy?

Because they cannot control every aspect of life, every consequence of their actions.
Or because they are too short-sighted and narrowminded.

I like the new pic, too. Maybe i should get a new one sometime soon..

Plus, i'm guessing you forgot about Bob Dylan. Hm?

Yes, by seeking enlightenment thru escapism, we move away from it.
We become addicted to pleasures and can't live without our addictions.

We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world. Helen Keller

I think that says everything I can understand about why people do what they do. And it sort-of goes with what sling said.

Hi Leila. Why do humans do things that make them unhappy? I think it's that they are born unhappy and they do things to make them happy. But all is full of love.

Confusion is next and next and next... after that there will be more confusion! I think Homo Escapeons' point about recognising that 'we have far more in common with each other than we think' is a remarkably sensible point. You're quality. Keep asking questions and stay happy x
